The Unstorying of a School Community: A 360° Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum

Most schools would say that they endeavor to be a kind and warm environment, a place where real learning can take place in a safe and nurturing space, but in reality, school communities are made up of human beings, and human beings are complicated. Interpersonal dynamics and conflicts of all kinds occur between children and adults alike. So how does a community become more kind in an authentic, meaningful way?

Building a healthy social-emotional school community involves several components: Identifying dysfunctional patterns, interpersonal dynamics, communication skills and strategies, conflict resolution, honesty, a focus on compassion and empathy, and a willingness to create a stronger school community for students, parents, faculty, and administration. This webinar discusses how Dr. Miller brought Unstorying to her own school community and shares her observations on implementing this curriculum, plus a game plan for others to use some of these tools at their own schools.

Nicole K. Miller, PhD joined the faculty of East Woods School in 2016 as an Upper School Humanities Teacher, and this past year, took on the additional role of Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator. A teacher for over 17 years, Dr. Miller has taught K-8 classes, mostly in the humanities and the performing arts, as well as led community service programs, created meaningful peer mediation programs, and consulted on, and wrote, curriculum for peace studies and advisory programs.

As an adjunct college professor in Classics and Humanities, Dr. Miller has taught courses in Classical and World Mythology at Montclair State University and Suffolk County Community College, and presented papers on Mythology, Depth Psychology, Unstorying, and the Arts at numerous conferences nationally, and internationally. Her outside work includes experience as a life coach, and is the founder of The Unstoried Self, which teaches the process of Unstorying to individuals, groups, and organizations. Dr. Miller is currently working on a book and curriculum for using Unstorying, a tool for breaking out of our patterning, and cultivating more meaningful and authentic interpersonal relationships, in school and organizational settings.
