For the past quarter century, CSEE has been recognizing outstanding community service programs in K-12 schools. Each year we acknowledge programs that best demonstrate an annual theme.

2016 Award Theme Announced: Meaningful Partnerships with Community Agencies

Deadline for Applications: Monday, February 8th, 2016

2015 Award Theme: Empowering Students Through Service

CSEE’s 2015 recognition program for exemplary practice in service looked for descriptions of independent school elementary, middle, or high school service programs that stand out for the way they are “empowering students.”  We looked for programs that pass the reins of service to students and work to build student leadership, student engagement, student confidence and competence.

First Place: Phillips Exeter Academy

Exeter, New Hampshire
Head of School: Thomas E. Hassan
Community Service Coordinator: Elizabeth Reyes

In light of this year’s service award theme, Empowering Students, CSEE was thrilled to see that Exeter students wrote and submitted their school’s application. The Exeter Social Service Organization, or ESSO, is student run and thus gives students great autonomy and a plethora of leadership opportunities. ESSO is led by a hard-working board of 9 students, with guidance from two staff members. These students are responsible for putting on an annual assembly, organizing an interest night, strategic planning, oversight and accountability, and training the club heads.
