Virtual Department Meetings - Student Leadership

Student Leadership Development Group

Please join our newest virtual department of educators passionate about student leadership development! Educators from across the nation will meet online for discussion and resource-sharing.

Many independent schools are teaching leadership skills and designing leadership centers that support ethical and empathetic habits. Join with other independent school faculty as we discuss ways of helping students develop styles of leadership that are authentic to them and confidence-building. Sessions will include talking about our definitions of leadership, sharing leadership class materials, resourcing each other with effective leadership activities, and helping one another shape our programs. All group meetings will be via Zoom and participants should come ready to share your work, ask your questions, and be willing to support colleagues in this work.

About Our Facilitator

Kate Parker-Burgard is the director of the Center for Leadership at St. Luke’s School, a secular private school for grades 5-12 in New Canaan, CT, where she has also served as dean of students, director of character education, and director of community affairs. The Center for Leadership promotes the understanding of leadership as a behavior, not a position, and so is taught as competencies that everyone can develop. In addition to teaching leadership, Kate focuses on community service in her work.

About Virtual Department Meetings

Many educators in CSEE focus areas are in a "department of one" at their schools (ie. the only service learning director, the only world religions teacher). Virtual Department Meetings are an opportunity for these educators to connect with their peers in other independent schools, to talk shop and to share ideas. These meetings are free for CSEE members, $100 per year for non-members, and will take place periodically throughout the year, with different themes.
