Candlemas (Christianity)
Tell a Friend About This EventTell a Friend

After giving birth to Jesus, Mary was obligated by Mosaic law to go to the temple with an offering, and have the priest pray for her so that she would be cleansed. This day marks the first solemn “presentation of Jesus” in the temple. In Catholic tradition, beeswax candles are blessed on this day and distributed to the clergy and the laity, and then there is a procession. The priest leading the procession stops occasionally to chant “the light of Christ,” which is then intoned by the people.
