Independent Schools are in a unique position to provide truly comprehensive human sexuality education in singularly bold and effective ways. This conference will offer a developmentally- and values-based framework for creating truly age appropriate, pedagogically sound curricula in authentic partnership with parents. Strategies for designing, implementing and sustaining PreK-12 curricula—even in the face of potential pushback—will be the central focus. Current topics such as sexual harassment, affirmative consent, and sexual and gender diversity will also be addressed. 


About the Presenter

Deborah Roffman 

Named one of Time Magazine’s “Top Sixteen Parenting Experts for the 21st Century,” Debbie Roffman is a sexuality educator, consultant, and author based in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has taught sexuality education in the lower, middle, and upper schools at Park School of Baltimore since 1975. Debbie’s most recent book of three books, Talk to Me First: Everything You Need to Know to Become Your Kids’ “Go-To” Person About Sex, was published in 2013 by Perseus Books. In addition to her constant writing and teaching, she’s worked with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, students, alumni, and trustees at more than 400 schools and organizations across the country, and has published widely in educational journals and featured on national media, including the NPR, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Nightline, the CBS Early Show, and 20/20. She’s referred to by her colleagues as the most articulate professional voice in the US on the need for broad-based human sexuality education. Her ability to find common ground by keeping the focus on young people and their universal needs around healthy sexual development is one of her most important gifts. She has wide appeal to schools across the independent school spectrum and to parents of all political stripes, religions, and backgrounds, as demonstrated through national recognition from such seemingly diverse groups as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (the coveted Mary Lee Tatum Apple Award) and the National Federation of Republican Women (Favorite Teacher Award).

What drives Debbie’s work is a single vision: that one day it will be families and schools―not media, merchandisers, entertainers, peers, and popular culture―who become the primary, as in first and most important, resources for young people about sex.

3:00-4:45 Sexuality Education is the Same, Not “Different”

     • Thinking pedagogically and developmentally—not emotionally—about “sex” education
     • The self-sabotaging double standards that make schools—and parents—afraid of the wrong things
     • The dangers that abdication by families and schools create, often in the name of “protection”
     • "Disappearing” the totally misplaced anxieties parents, schools and teachers commonly apply to broaching the subject of sexuality
     • Anticipating, diffusing, and responding effectively to potential "push back" from parents or others in the school community
     • Enlisting/providing ongoing, explicit, and effective administrative support
     • A 20-point checklist for successfully creating, implementing and sustaining a PreK-12 sexuality curriculum

4:45-5:00: BREAK

5:00-7:00: Sexuality Isn’t a Fancier Word for “Sex”

     • What is truly comprehensive human sexuality education?
     • All teachers can be sexuality educators
     • “The 5:5 Paradigm”: a developmentally and values-based framework for curriculum design, PreK-12
     • Teachers and parents as “nurturers” of healthy sexuality, not “gatekeepers” of sexual knowledge
     • Establishing age and stage appropriate sexuality benchmarks for children ages 3-18
     • Identifying different KINDS of values and a school’s unique roles in regard to each
     • Setting/teaching limits and boundaries around issues connected to human sexuality
     • Our roles as “anticipatory guides” and how they pertain to healthy sexuality
     • Utilizing the 5:5 Paradigm to build trust and truly authentic partnerships with parents
     • Revisiting the 20-Point Checklist





8:30-10:00: Teaching About Sexual and Gender Diversity

     • There’s more than one “binary”
     • New constructs for thinking/teaching about sexual and gender diversity
     • Each person has their own unique “Sexual and Gender Profile”
     • Avoiding unintentional “othering”
     • Unpacking traditional gender roles, their relationship to power, and how they impact attitudes about sexual and gender diversity
     • Understanding sexual and gender diversity is always a work in progress: the explosion of new terms in regard to sexuality,           
gender and identity, and how to keep up
     • Debate: Is the goal to “erase” gender?
     • Students as allies in supporting positive school change

10:00-10:15: BREAK

10:15-11:45: Teaching About Intimacy, Boundaries, and “Consent”

     • The missing discourse about sex: what does it have to do with intimacy?
     • “Hooking Up,” and how the phrase itself sabotages critical thinking
     • The parallels between emotional and sexual intimacy that adults can easily draw
     • Understanding “victim blaming” and the real cause of rape
     • Unpacking “Rape Culture” in the wake of #MeToo and the Kavanaugh hearings, and some very hopeful signs
     • Teaching about “Affirmative Consent” starts in Pre-K
     • Exercise: “Who is responsible?”

11:45-12:30: LUNCH

12:45-2:15: Finding Context and Making Meaning

     • GUARANTEED: How to respond to any and all questions about sexuality any student will ever ask you (worth the price of 
     • FINAL QUIZ: So, how would you respond to this one??

2:15-3:00: Revisiting the 20-Point Checklist, Q&A
