Target Audience

This event is for those responsible for aiding a school community through times of grief, including chaplains, counselors, administrators, and others.

Addressing individual and collective grief in our schools requires depth both when it comes to our philosophical approach and our management of details.

We will begin the day with our keynote, Amy Wright Glenn, as she delves into the concept of “Holding Space” and prompts us to reflect on the broad strokes and essential purpose of our own practice around grief. - What are we trying to achieve?

Bob Mattingly will then guide us through a policy template, highlighting what makes for an effective (or ineffective) document and why it’s crucial that it be developed before events occur. - What is our plan of approach?

After clarifying our purpose and policy, we’ll gather questions for Donna Schuurman about what this entails for the practical details of our work. - What’s our response to the friends of a student whose parent has died? How do we transition a class to a new teacher after a staff member’s death? What does one do with the desk of a deceased student and when is it time to dismantle a memorial?

Our hope is that participants will establish relationships that lead to the formation of an ongoing, active network from which all can draw.
