Maximizing Civic and Academic Outcomes: Understanding What Works in Service Learning
This article, a research brief by RMC Research Corporation, outlines factors that affect the quality of a service-learning program: that projects should last longer than a semester, that young people have some choice in projects, and are empowered in the process, and that the teacher in charge have some experience (especially because of the teacher's role in guiding reflection), among others. In addition to the research brief, also see this paper by lead researcher Shelley Billig et al. on eleven factors of service that influence students' attitudes and actions toward civic engagement.
