This five-day summer institute brings together university scholars and independent school religion teachers for study and resource sharing. Participants will leave with new knowledge, new ideas for the classroom, resources, and great contacts. This year's main focus will be on Hinduism, with Arti Dhand, Ph.D., plus much more.
About the Key Presenters
Arti Dhand, Ph.D. is associate professor of Religion at The University of Toronto. Her main areas of research include the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, Hindu ethics, gender issues, and religion and sexuality. She has authored numerous articles and the book Woman as Fire, Woman as Sage: Sexual Ideology in the Mahabharata (2008).
Amer Latif teaches in the religion department at Marlboro College in Marlboro, Vermont. He wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Rumi, the 13th century Muslim scholar and mystic who in the past two decades has been the best selling poet in the world. Latif's professional work today is with texts in five different languages, and he continues to focus on Rumi. Woven into a morning devoted to Islam in general, and an afternoon focusing on Rumi and specific examples of how to use the poet in the classroom, Latif will introduce participants to his teaching philosophy that religious studies, much like learning a language, can make much use of myth, ritual, and symbol.
