- Where did honor codes come from?
- What kinds of honor systems are currently being used?
- How can existing honor codes be revitalized, or new honor codes be
implemented?
<info>
About the presentation

The essential components of programs to foster academic integrity overlap significantly with the essential practices of service learning programs that result in civic and moral growth. Moreover, the components that overlap also happen to be integral to proven practices in character education research. If we plan to educate ethically engaged citizens for tomorrow’s world, we must incorporate these proven practices into our schools.

CSEE executive director David Streight will present. The presentation will be followed by a reception and informal networking session.

This event is free. Please register if you will attend, or email CSEE at info@csee.org
</info>

    <info>
Representatives from four schools with exemplary student leadership programs will present their curriculum and share ideas. Participants and presenters will note what all leadership programs have in common, and how leadership development might differ depending on school climate, school population and other factors. Our goal is to help schools identify those qualities that are essential to school leadership programs, and which qualities help but are dependent on the kinds of schools fostering leadership.

Our program in 2009 will feature three high schools and one middle school. Two of the schools are urban day schools, one a suburban day school, and one a rural boarding school. One is a Catholic school and the others are secular. All have programs that have been thought through carefully and are based on solid principles. All show evidence of success, and yet we all have things to learn.

School programs featured:
Culver Academies, Culver, IN

Culver Academies
Presented by John Yeager

The aim of good education is to provide students with the experiences and means to live well. At Culver, this is accomplished through the tireless efforts of dedicated instructional faculty, counselors and coaches that help guide students as they chart their courses through childhood and adolescence to adulthood. By promoting a strengths-based approach to academic, leadership, the arts, wellness/health and athletic programs; educators make an explicit connection between the mind, body and spirit come alive in their students. A systems approach in the schools integrates the experiences of well-being, contentment and satisfaction, along with hope and optimism, in contributing to students’ living a flourishing life. It also supports the opportunities for teachers and students to leverage their own and other’s strengths to become servant leaders and bring out the best in themselves and others.

De LaSalle High School
Presented by Dina Levi

Through the Student Coalition on Respectful Education (SCORE), upperclass students at De LaSalle High School learn to become leaders within the school through a series of workshops on diversity that they first participate in, and then lead for younger students. While SCORE’s primary focus is to create a more understanding and inclusive community, it also aims to develop leadership within the student body. Students involved in the program learn effective techniques to engage younger students in difficult conversations, learn skills to work effectively as a team, and most importantly they learn the value of modeling the behavior they teach in the community.

The Rivers School
Presented by Susie McGee and Clinton Howarth

The Rivers School in Weston, Massachusetts is now in its 9th year of an initiative to help all middle school students develop leadership skills. One foundational question is "How are you leading yourself every day?" All faculty members are involved with the leadership training program, and they continue to focus on how they can make it better. The program is deeply integrated into the middle school curriculum, but includes an overnight session for 8th graders and three days of activities for all students at the beginning of each school year.

Flintridge Preparatory Academy
Presented by Michael Roffina

Flintridge Preparatory School’s approach to the development of ethical leaders links academic excellence and rigor with a soulful affirmation of personal and communal values. Teachers, students, and families are all given responsibility for accomplishing the school’s goals, specifically by modeling the four values that inform everything done at Prep—honesty, respectfulness, kindness and generosity. In addition to general school culture, the development of ethical leaders is woven into extra-curricular programs that help in the endeavor: peer counseling, community service, student mentoring and tutoring, coaching, outdoor education, and one-on-one conferences.

Accommodations

    <info>
This year's institute will focus especially on Buddhism and Islam, with university scholars and creative secondary school teachers from independent schools around the country. Teachers of religions and history leave our institutes with increased knowledge, new ideas for what to do in the classroom, and great lists of both resources and contacts.

Featured Presenters in June 2009

Christian Wedemeyer, Ph.D.
University of Chicago

Buddhist Texts for Classroom Use

In three half-day sessions on Buddhism, Dr. Christian Wedemeyer will address basic issues and key concepts, the use of the Lotus Sutra, a key text for the classroom, and Buddhist rituals and practices.

Notre Dame University/Indiana University

Modern Issues in Islam
In this half-day session Dr. Afsaruddin will focus on issues that come to the forefront with Muslims in the world today; she will focus especially on religious pluralism, tolerance, and gender.

Jihad
In this afternoon session, participants will look at the concept of jihad in Islam: its Qur'anic roots, its history, its varying interpretations in the modern world.

This session will provide the opportunity to explore a wide variety of resources for teaching about Hinduism. It will include activities and readings for working with Vedic literature, the Upanishads, the bhakti poets, the famous Hindu epics, contemporary issues found in India (such as nationalism and environmental issues) and it will also include ideas about how to teach about Hinduism in America. The session will include hands-on activities for participants that may be utilized and modified in one's own classroom and it will provide both background material on these topics for students and suggested readings for students (and instructors alike) who might enjoy the opportunity to continue the journey as a lifelong learner.

Religion, Ethics and Nature: Teaching about nature in the RS classroom

Global concern over the health of the planet continues to grow, with increasing population and continued economic growth raising important questions about natural resource use and conservation and the trajectory of development. This session is designed to demonstrate how RS studies classrooms may be used as an arena for analyzing the relationships between human and nonhuman nature. We will begin by exploring some of the ways that the constructed terms religion, nature and ethics are conceived. Then, we will discuss ways to help students explore such questions as: To what extent have religions contributed to environmental degradation? What solutions do certain religious traditions propose? Resource ideas for the classroom will be provided for topics such as 1) food, agriculture and population issues 2) animals 3) media, consumption and education 4) science/technology 5) recreation, sacred spaces and recreation 6) water issues 7) sustainability and politics with a special focus on consumerism and religion.
The Other Smith's Contribution to Understanding and Teaching Religions
This presentation will introduce the legacy of one of the most remarkable contributors to religious studies in the 20th century, Wilfred Cantwell Smith. Several passages from Smith's work will be presented and discussed, especially passages that are relevant both to Islam and to the larger discussion about how to understand, and how to teach, religion.

David Streight
Islam's Early Years

This presentation will look at the birth of Islam and key events in the early years of the Muslim Community, with a focus on key issues and information for the high school religion classroom. Special focus will be on the early factors that served to split the Shi'ite partisans of the Ali from the larger Sunni community.

Approaches to Teaching Religion

Two issues will be addressed in this block of time, both emerging from recommendations by CSEE's experienced teachers consortium. The first entails the mindset of the teacher that guides his or her way of presenting religious traditions: are other traditions looked at as inferior to one's own tradition? are religions presented as if they were static entities with set beliefs and practices unchanged by time? are all religions equal in all ways? How are religions affected by historical and political events? Etc. The second entails teaching religions through themes, such as pilgrimage, love, or art. Participants are expected to finish the presentation with new thoughts about exciting new possibilities.

Dan Heischman returns to lead the event that a number of independent school educators have called "the best professional development experience of my life." In this five day workshop-retreat, participants examine case studies of ethical situations in independent schools, and discuss thought-provoking pieces of literature. This year's texts - included in the price of registration - are William Damon's The Path to Purpose and a biography of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass entitled Giants, by John Stauffer.

This year's institute returns to the Whidbey Institute at the enthusiastic recommendation of the last group of participants who met there.

Each participant will be asked to provide a case study (identifying information altered) from his or her professional experience or knowledge. Participants will introduce and lead discussions on their own cases, and each will also lead a discussion on a section of the literature read. Ample time is also available for formal and informal interactions, and to enjoy the beauty of Whidbey Island.

This conference is reccommended for school administrators, teachers, trustees, staff, and others interested in the moral / ethical climates at schools.

Accommodations

The fee for the institute includes all meals and accommodations at the Whidbey Institute in Washington State's Puget Sound (a location we return to after enthusiastic recommendations by our 2007 attendees).

Travel to Whidbey

Whidbey Island is located about an hour northwest of Seattle, Washington. CSEE recomends flying to Seattle International Airport, renting a car and taking the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry (fare is less than $7 per car). <info>
A Community Service Director's work can be isolating. By creating relationships with other community service professionals, one can develop allies that help inspire, educate, and sustain our work! In these two days, community service experts Mary Pashley and Ann Saylor will explore best practices, ideas, projects and resources for directing a top-notch service learning program.

From our presenter, Mary Pashley:
Community Service and service learning continue to be the buzz words of this country - certainly words from our first African-American president to inspire every US citizen. We live in a world faced with many challenges and the only hope for a better tomorrow is caring for one another today. The time has come - our Call To Service - to reach out to those in need everywhere. As we educate our students to become responsible, global citizens, how do we inculcate service into their lives, the lives of our school and in the lives of resistant faculty? Has the economic downturn affected your programs? How do we make sense of this uncertainty and give hope to those affected? Do your service programs span the globe or only extend to your backyard? Is it time to grow? Has national security or the reality of epidemics threatened your plans for local or global service?

Plan to discuss:

Best Practices: What works well for you?

Local and Global Needs

Creating a Culture of Service at our Schools

Service Planning

Funding for Projects

Service Learning and Academic Departments

Gap Year Options: Service for Students

Challenges in a Challenging Time

Action Plans: Where do you go from here?

Open Forum: What's on your mind?

Featuring:

Student Voices - Reflection on Global Service Learning

Sustainable Horizons - Service Opportunities in Central America

Local Service Agencies - The Need is Greater Than Ever

In this 90 minute webinar, David Streight will outline the key components of the work he did to help high school students learn, appreciate, and be willing to invest themselves in the ways and powers of love and kindness. Students approached the course with the understanding that "if love is so important as a theme for novels, plays, poetry, religious traditions, and—especially—our daily lives, we might be better at giving and getting it if we had a clearer idea what it was." In a solid academic course, students did their exploration through readings, reflection, projects, and a social experiment. Participants in this webinar will go through the readings Streight used, the projects he offered students, how class time was spent, and the philosophical basis for the course in general. They will be invited to make small or large modifications to their own courses—ethics, literature, health, psychology, or religion—such that students are both more aware of the power of love, kindness, and compassion, and perhaps more willing to act on this new and all-important awareness.

The price for this webinar is a "site" price. As many individuals from your school as can fit around a computer screen (or projection of a screen) are invited to participate.
