<info>
About the Workshop

In this two day workshop, Professor Gottlieb will lead participants through a variety of social justice issues with a special focus on issues appropriate for the classroom.

Participants in this conference will

examine case studies posing difficult moral questions

look at environmentalism as a context in which secular and spiritual, individual and collective resources coalesce

consider ways of enabling students to confront the moral and

political questions they will face as adults

come away with a number of techniques to make issues come alive for students

With a variety of examples that can be used in the ethics or social justice classroom, four questions will be looked at specifically:

What does it mean to be moral?

Why should I be moral?

What is a just society?

How can I—or we—help create one?

Particular topics will include the difference between morality as law and morality as virtue; liberal as opposed to communitarian understandings of social justice; the ways in which secular and religious perspectives on social justice can complement each other; and the role of attachment to work or career in posing difficult moral questions (ie. the ways some of the careers our students most covet might place them in challenging moral dilemmas).

Workshop Presenter(s)

Roger S. Gottlieb

Lodging

Participants are encouraged to seek their own lodging. CSEE recommends The Holiday Inn because of its close proximity to St.Paul’s.

Location/Transportation

The workshop will be held at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH.

Participants flying into the area can use Manchester Airport or Boston’s Logan Airport. Concord Trailways provides an inexpensive, clean and quick bus service to Concord from Boston. Shuttle service is available through On Demand Service from Manchester Airport. Contact CSEE for details.
</info>

    <info>
About the Workshop

Disaster happens in our communities, around the country and across the world. Our students hear the news and want to respond. How do we answer the call for help? Do we fundraise or do we rebuild walls?

This workshop explored the roles that faculty and students have played and can play in helping fellow human beings in difficult situations. This year’s event addressed the work of New Orleans students in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. We learned how schools can be poised to respond to communities in crisis – whether it is within our own backyards or across the globe.

We re-energized, shared, networked and built our toolbox for establishing and fine-tuning meaningful service learning programs.

This workshop was open to elementary, middle and high school faculty responsible for service learning, community service, and/or planning service trips and activities. We organized the learning to meet the needs of new and veteran community service directors, so be prepared to ask questions and share best practices.

A community service director’s work can be isolating and discouraging, because our work is never-ending. By creating and fostering relationships with other community service professionals, we develop allies that help inspire, educate, and sustain our spirits. This was not just a teaching conference: it was a time for you to build your own network of community and support, so you can do your best work.

    <info>
About the Workshop

In this two-day workshop Professor Noddings will discuss the ethics of care for which she is so well known. She will focus on relations, reciprocity, and moral education. The distinction between virtue-caring and relational-caring and what that difference means for teaching will be considered in some depth. As time permits, we will also explore the application of care ethics to global education, peace education, and place-based education. The workshop will also consider what schools might do to establish conditions under which caring may flourish.

    <info>
About the Workshop

Approaching Sacred Art

For more than ten years, the Ackland Art Museum has been engaged in teaching and learning about world religions using works of art as catalysts for discussion and appreciation. In this morning presentation and workshop, Amanda Hughes will present an overview of some of the ways works of art engage and inform faith communities and some of the ways these same works, when moved to a museum context, can serve as powerful tools for engaging visitors, teachers and students in understanding the role of faith in the world today.

Participants will also be given the opportunity to develop object based lesson plans for use in their classroom. The Five Faiths Project at the Ackland focuses on Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam – five traditions with living communities in the Research Triangle of North Carolina.

Native American Spirituality

This workshop will examine Native American Spirituality in the context of two particular indigenous peoples of North America: the Salish peoples of Washington state, and Crow/Apsaalooka peoples of Montana. The workshop will explore shared characteristics, or “family resemblances,” of native peoples using the concept of “lifeways.” Lifeways is a term John Grim uses to situate any study of indigenous religious traditions in the seamless context of the particular peoples’ being considered. That is, Native American Spirituality cannot be separated out from the economic, political, social, and environmental life of a specific people. In the final two hours, Grim will discuss two rituals, one from each of the groups considered. The discussion will focus on particular practices, concepts and values that distinguish these distinct forms of Native American Spirituality.

Adolescent Rites of Passage

In this session Dr. Sarah Pike will look with participants at the topic of adolescent rites of passage, with a special focus on the religious and spiritual context in which they take place; she will introduce participants to recent research (her own and that of others) on adolescent spirituality and current trends in the field, including teen Witches and religion and youth music cultures (Muslim themes in rap, Christian rock, etc.).

    <info>
About the Workshop

Our goal is to help all schools develop their full potential to develop ethical leadership for tomorrow’s world. Four exemplary student leadership programs will be the focus at this two and a half day conference.

Participants and presenters will note and discuss what all leadership programs have in common, and how leadership development might differ depending on school climate, school population, or other factors.

Participants will be able to look at exemplary student leadership programs for the purpose of fine tuning a high quality leadership program at their own school.

Workshop Presenter(s)

Lodging

There are a few lodging facilities near the Culver campus. CSEE recommends the Holiday Inn Plymouth. Participants can also stay in nearby Plymouth, IN (aprox. 15 miles north).

Location/Transportation

Culver Academies may be reached via a number of airports. Indianapolis is the closest, but Midway and O’Hare are also feasible. The easiest drive is probably the airport in South Bend, although fares may be higher. It is easiest to get to the school by rental car from the airport. CSEE will reimburse $60 of car rental fees to those with rented cars who have a second conference attendee as a passenger. Contact CSEE for details.
</info>

Teaching the Bhagavad Gita and Teaching the Upanishads (Suzanne Bessenger)

This two-day workshop will spend a brief time with key concepts in Hinduism (karma, dharma, bhakti, etc.) and the way these concepts shape Hindu worldviews, and then turn its focus to exploring the classical Indian texts, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. In particular, the texts will be looked at as windows into the interrelated religious traditions and practices of South Asia commonly called “Hinduism.” Reading the philosophical Upanishads and the devotional Bhagavad Gita, participants will examine these texts’ references to the three Hindu paths to liberation—ritual, contemplative renunciation, and devotion.

A Jewish Literary and Theological Reading of Selected Hebrew Bible Narratives and How Jerusalem Became Sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians (Marc L. Raphael)

The first of Raphael’s half-day presentations will use medieval Jewish and modern Jewish biblical commentators, and narratives from I and II Samuel and I and II Kings, to demonstrate that the biblical narrators were just as sophisticated as any contemporary author of fiction. Using texts from Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, the second of Raphael’s presentations will explore the emergence of Jerusalem as sacred place/space in each tradition, noticing along the way how very differently each tradition sees the holy city.

Other Topics:

Teaching the Religions of China

Lodging

Participants from out of town will lodge and take their meals at Cathedral College, on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. <info>
About the Workshops

Five days of unhurried study and reflection on moral education and the moral life of schools, for school administrators, chaplains, trustees, and others. This event has long been one of CSEE’s most popular workshop offerings.

The summer Ethics Institute with Dan Heischman brings participants together to discuss thought-provoking pieces of fiction and non-fiction, and to examine case studies from ethical situations in schools across the country.

Each participant will be asked to contribute a case study from his or her school (names and other identifying information changed). Examples of case studies from past years will be available as a suggested template. Participants will also be asked to complete readings before their arrival.

Readings will be sent to participants in May. Each participant will lead one morning small-group session on one of the readings, and one afternoon session on a case study from personal school experience.

Ample time is available to enjoy local cultural attractions.

For single occupancy rooms, there is a surcharge of $225 for the week.

About the Presentations

Taoism and Nature
This presentation will look at how religious Daoists have historically viewed the natural world, and how their viewpoint has shaped their interactions with nature in terms of philosophy, ethics and practice. It will focus on China’s sacred geography, the various mountains and grottos where Daoists have engaged in meditation and self-cultivation, and the relationship between the inner landscape of the body and the surrounding environment. The presentation will include a brief introduction to the story of religion in modern China and how Chinese people are currently re-evaluating the merits of traditional religion and culture especially with regard to formulating a contemporary environmental ethic.

Teaching the Universe Story
Cosmology has always influenced the constructions of worldviews, and religions mutually reinforce both cosmologies and worldviews. For the first time in human history we now possess a complete scientific cosmology that can tell the story of the universe from beginning to the present. For teachers of religious studies this understanding, and the understanding of the new emerging cosmology, have profound implications This previously incomprehensible "epic of evolution" allows us both to see and to participate in the unfolding of the universe. In this presentation, Tom Collins will introduce his work teaching the Universe Story and the effects the work has had on students.
