This 6-day workshop (4 full days, 2 half days) will prepare participants to be insightful guides and helpful resources: leaders for ethical education initiatives in their schools. In addition to a solid introduction to the whats, whys, and hows of moral / ethical education, each participant will leave with a solid understanding of, and a detailed, personally constructed plan for accomplishing, his our her particular school's mission-based character education goals. Institute sessions will be highly interactive and information will be based on research findings / expert-recommended practices. A small amount of reading will be asked prior to attendance. A number of printed and other resources will be given to participants during the course of this Institute.

Topics addressed:
Our goal is to have participants leave the Institute with knowledge and skills in all the areas listed below, along with the sense of having had a highly enjoyable, personally fulfilling, and professionally relevant social and educational experience:

• the essential structure of a character education/ ethical education program
• the process of moral growth and how to integrate it into educational programs
• setting ethical education goals: performance character and moral character
• assessing progress in character education
• integrating character into the curriculum
• integrating character into the extracurricular life of the school
• linking a school’s goals to key school programs:
advisory, community service, honor councils
• aligning discipline and character ed
• creating a school culture for character
• the positive link between character and academics
• leading an ethical education workshop back at school
• building intrinsic motivation: how good programs do this
• leading a workshop back at school

Each participant will receive:
• A packet of “essential readings” on topics covered
• Smart and Good High Schools: A Report to the Nation
• Highly Effective Programs: Character Education in Independent Schools
• Case studies for use in school

About the Presenters
Nel Noddings, Ph.D.

Nel Noddings is Lee Jacks Professor of Education Emerita at Stanford University, and past president of the National Academy of Education, the Philosophy of Education Society, and the John Dewey Society. She served for 15 years as a teacher, administrator, and curriculum supervisor in New Jersey public schools.

Dr. Noddings has published 18 books and hundreds of articles, chapters, reviews, and commentaries. Her books include Caring (2nd ed., 2003), The Challenge to Care in Schools (2nd. ed., 2005), Happiness and Education (2003), Critical Lessons: What Our Schools Should Teach (2006), Starting at Home: Caring and Social Policy (2002), When School Reform Goes Wrong (2007), and Educating Moral People (2002).

Thomas Lickona, Ph.D.

Tom Lickona is perhaps the best known character educator in the United States today. He is a Professor of Education at the State University of New York (Cortland) and director of the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs. He is author of seven books, including Raising Good ChildrenEducating for Character, and Character Matters: How to Help Our Children Develop Good Judgment, Integrity, and Other Essential Virtues

Accommodations

Meeting space, meals and overnight accommodations will be provided by Pace University in lower Manhattan. Day-only attendees will be provided dinner the first evening, and lunch on all days. Participants selecting room and board registration will have all meals provided, individual bedrooms, and shared baths in Maria's Tower, located at One Pace Plaza. Bed linens will be provided; participants should bring their own towels.
