This call continues a series of dialogues between religion teachers from a variety of Independent Schools across the U.S about best practices for Religious Studies education in Secondary Schools. Our focus for the January call will be about the benefits and challenges of field trips to houses of worship and guest speakers in the classroom. There is divided opinion about the utility and value of field trips and guest speakers in a religious studies context. For many educators, these are precious opportunities for students to experience traditions directly, engage all the senses in a visceral engagement with religion, and observe cultural manifestations of religions in their contexts. Some educators, however, have asserted that field trips and guest speakers too often stifle or limit student learning about the internal diversity of religious traditions. In this conference call, we hope to explore both the challenges and benefits of site visits and conversations between students and religious practitioners. Teachers are encouraged to share their insights from past experiences and recommendations for best practices. Please join us for what promises to be a productive and engaging discussion.
