About this event

In CSEE’s eighth annual symposium, representatives from three schools with carefully designed student leadership initiatives will present their programs and share ideas on how to create leadership opportunities and train students. Presenters will also discuss challenges overcome and those still being faced.

CSEE’s goal with this event is to help participants identify the qualities that seem essential to all school leadership programs and simultaneously to see how leadership development might differ depending on school climate, school population, mission, or other factors.

Whether looking to start a leadership development initiative from scratch, or desiring to improve an existing program, participants will leave this event with ideas, resources and enthusiasm for working on a top-notch leadership program at their school.

Presenting Schools

The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY

Presenters Lee Dieck and Matt Kammrath will discuss how they started the Ethical Leadership Program at The Masters School, which began in 2012. The Leadership Project encourages students, faculty and staff to engage in activities that help them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the impacts they have on their communities. Students are taught the integral components of leadership, are mentored through meaningful leadership experiences, and are empowered to choose positive action and lives of significance.

St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas, TX

Martin Stegemoeller, one of the most respected leadership trainers in the independent school world, is a Leadership and Ethics Program Leader at St. Mark's School of Texas. Utilizing classes, clubs, advisories, class meetings, visiting speakers, summer institutes, travel to national conferences, and in-house curricula, St. Mark's Leadership and Ethics Program works across divisions and grade levels to teach and encourage all members of its community to cultivate the habits of skillful, entrepreneurial, sustainable leadership through service.

Delbarton School, Morristown, NJ

Michael Carr will present on Delbarton's Deanery program, which is modeled after Chapter 21 of the Rule of St. Benedict. The student body is broken down into 36 groups, each of which is comprised of students from all grade levels, 7-12. Each deanery is led by a senior and junior Dean chosen by the moderators. The vertical breakdown allows students from all grades to interact and form a cohesive group. The Deans go through training in leadership styles and skills during the course of the year, with a unique focus on peer to peer mentoring. Deans are in charge of their meetings and facilitate discussions while communicating important topics to the students in their charge. The program has worked for many years on the Delbarton Campus.
